Discover the 5 Parks We Love in Waterford, Michigan
As our classes wrap up for the summer, head to The Breakie Bunch Learning Center’s five favorite local parks:
1. Observe Farm Animals at Hess-Hathaway Park
Hess-Hathaway Park is a beloved spot for animal lovers of all ages. Once called Lone Cedar Farm, the property was gifted to Waterford, Michigan, by Mrs. Myrtle Hess under one condition—that it be used by the township to enjoy nature as much as she did. With a community garden, adorable farm animals, rentable structures, beautiful trails, and an accessible All Kids Playground built to accommodate children with disabilities, every inch of the property is put to good use!
2. Go Swimming at Dodge #4 State Park
If you’re craving a day at the beach, head to Dodge #4 State Park. Located along Cass Lake, this mile-long stretch of sandy beach is perfect for swimming, boating, and fishing the day away with the whole family. When you need a break, you can start a volleyball game, sit in the shade, or play on the swing set.
3. Splash Around the Waterpark at Waterford Oaks County Park
With miles of trails, courts for various sports, the Oakland Country Farmer’s Market, and the Waterford Oaks Bicycle Motocross Track, this is one of our favorite parks year-round. But when summer rolls around and the waterpark opens, the real excitement begins!
Open June through Labor Day, the waterpark includes a wave pool, tubing, and water playground. If you forget to pack a bite to eat, don’t worry—the Blue Water Grill is perfect for quick and easy concessions.
4. Climb Around Paradise Peninsula
With a tree fort play structure, sand dunes, climbing rocks, a simulated marsh area, and an “up north woods” cabin, the Michigan-themed Paradise Peninsula is a longtime go-to adventure for Waterford families. Your little ones will love exploring the nature-inspired terrain all day long.
For younger children in kindergarten, preschool, and below, we recommend keeping a close eye on them as they play, as the rock features could be a bit challenging. After you look at each unique feature, start a game at the tennis and sand volleyball courts or relax under the pavilion.
5. Spend a Sunny Afternoon at Depot Park
For a serene spot in Waterford, Michigan, take the kids to Depot Park. With a small but fun playground structure, charming gazebo, plenty of picnic tables and benches, and a bubbling stream running through the park, these green spaces are the perfect place to spend the day. Don’t forget to take some breadcrumbs to feed the ducks!
