It might be cold out now, but before you know it, the trees will be in bloom, the flowers will start peeking out of their beds, and we’ll welcome warmer weather once again. As we eagerly await the warmer temperatures, now is the perfect time to scout out family activities in the Waterford area. Check out our list of some of our favorite springtime events in Michigan and start planning. Spring will be here before you know it!

Monster Energy AMA Supercross World Championship

Ford Field welcomes a different type of motor to the motor city in Michigan on March 21. Watching off-road motorcycles race through a dirt track course and taking on steep jumps in the Monster Energy AMA Supercross World Championship is sure to get your blood pumping. Tickets start at $15 — you’ll pay for the whole seat, but you’ll likely only need the edge!

Detroit Tigers’ Kids Opening Day

The arrival of spring means the arrival of baseball season. Just a short drive from Waterford, join the Detroit Tigers as they take on the Cleveland Indians in their 11th annual Kids Opening Day on Sunday, April 5 at Comerica Park. The game will include face painters, jugglers, magicians, on-field opportunities, and more that’s sure to be a day to remember for fans of all ages.

Bunnyville at the Detroit Zoo

Giraffes at zoo

Toddlers will have an eggcellent time searching for their share of 100 golden eggs dropped throughout this Michigan zoo’s grounds by the Easter Bunny. This two-day, zoo-wide egg hunt traverses the grass, sapling, and clover that surround the zoo’s more than 2,600 animals. The children who find a golden egg will be eligible for a prize. Bunnyville also includes enrichment activities, a puppet show, whisker painting, and games. Enjoy a buffet-style waffle breakfast beside hundreds of free-flying butterflies in the Butterfly Garden. If you attend, consider bringing a canned or non-perishable food item to donate to Gleaners Community Food Bank.

City of Detroit Parks and Recreation’s Easter Fun Fest

The City of Detroit Parks and Recreation Department will host its free annual Easter Fun Fest Eggstravaganza from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on April 11. Bring your toddler for photos with the Easter Bunny and enjoy food, music, candy, and plenty of fun for the whole family.

Tinkering for Tots Pre-School Program at the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation

Give your toddler a head-start with STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) with hands-on programming at Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation and Greenfield Village on the second Monday of each month. Designed for curious preschoolers, hands-on activities focus on themed materials and then expand outward with storytelling, crafting, building, and artifact exploration. Children are encouraged to touch, examine, compare, contrast, and combine with new activities each month at the museum and village. They’ll explore artifacts with guidance from the museum’s experts and special guests, and hear inspiring stories to feed their imaginations, boost creative thinking, and language development.

Those are some of our favorite events, but there are plenty more in the Waterford area. If you’re still looking for more family-friendly events, don’t forget about:

  • Checking museum calendars for special events and activities
  • Planetarium shows (always a kid-favorite!)
  • Asking around at your childcare center
