The only thing better than discovering the perfect preschool for your littlest learners is finding out it’s completely free! Michigan’s GSRP has been around for years, but if you’re a first-time parent or have recently moved to the state, you may not know if your family qualifies. Learn how to apply and sign up for this life-changing free preschool program today.

What is GSRP?

GSRP, which stands for Great Start Readiness Program, is Michigan’s solution to providing four-year-olds from lower-income families a successful academic start. The program’s main goal is to prepare children for the next steps in their schooling journey by providing them with a high-quality education, a well-rounded curriculum, and a safe space to learn and grow.

Who Funds the Free Preschools in Michigan?

It may sound too good to be true, but Michigan’s free preschool program is funded directly by the state. The funding for GSRP comes from the School Aid budget each year, as well as a few grants and federal recovery funds. When your child is enrolled, you won’t pay a dime!

How to Apply to GSRP in Michigan

If it sounds like Michigan’s free preschool program might be the right fit for you and your tiny tot, you’re in luck! Applying to GSRP is easy and streamlined for ultimate convenience. Follow these simple steps to get started:

Step 1: Check Eligibility Requirements

While GSRP aims to take as many children as possible, there are a few requirements that must be met in order to be considered eligible for the free preschools in Michigan. While there are a few extenuating factors that could automatically make a child eligible, such as homelessness or being placed in foster care, the basic requirements include:

  • The child must reside in Michigan
  • The child must be 4 years old by or before September 1st (though early enrollment is available)
  • Priority enrollment goes to families at or below the 400% federal poverty limit (or make about $128,000 a year per family of four)

Step 2: Research Participating Preschool Programs Near You

Once you’ve determined your eligibility, it’s time to search for the participating free Michigan preschools around you. Visit the Great Start to Quality website and put in your zip code to see which locations near you offer the Great Start Readiness Program.

The Breakie Bunch Learning Center has two locations that offer this free Michigan preschooling. If you live in Waterford or Goodrich, swing by and inquire about our programs anytime.

Step 3: Gather the Correct Documents

Once you’ve found a preschool you like, make sure you have all your required documents in order. You’ll need papers verifying your child’s age (such as a birth certificate), proof of residency, physical and shot records from your family’s doctor, and proof of income (such as pay stubs, W2s, tax returns, or DHHS statements).

Step 4: Fill Out and Send in the Form

Now that you have your papers in order, you can fill out the official application. Most GSRP programs offer an online option, but depending on the location, you have to go old-school and mail them in.

When you’re touring a facility, ask which method they prefer to avoid any last-minute surprises. Complete the application alongside your documents and hit submit!

Step 5: Wait to Hear Back

Once your application is sent off, all that’s left to do is wait! Stay in touch with your chosen free Michigan preschool program to check on its status and get updates along the way. If your child is not accepted, they will be placed on the official waitlist. If spots open up later, you’ll hear back again.

Give Michigan’s free preschool a chance, and start your application right away! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact The Breakie Bunch—we’re happy to help.
